The details of Jean-Pierre-Marie Persoit’s early training remain uncertain. His style suggests contact with the world surrounding Nicolas Lupot and the first generation after Tourte, but no definitive apprenticeship record has yet settled the question.

Persoit entered the workshop of Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume around 1826 and remained there until approximately 1838. In this important Parisian setting he produced bows of consistently high quality and helped shape the workshop tradition that would influence the rest of the nineteenth century. Dominique Peccatte worked under his guidance and absorbed elements of both Persoit and Tourte before developing his own powerful model.

Around 1825 Persoit began using the distinctive P.R.S. mark. His independently branded work is scarce. Surviving bows reveal a maker of discipline and personality whose rounded heads, low frogs and carefully controlled proportions differ subtly from the later Peccatte school.
