Pierre Simon trained and worked in Mirecourt before moving to Paris in 1838 to join Dominique Peccatte. The influence of Peccatte remained visible throughout his work, particularly in the strength and breadth of his earlier models.
In 1840 Simon entered the workshop of Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume. During four important years there he produced many accomplished bows, including examples of Vuillaume’s celebrated picture-bow type. When Peccatte returned to Mirecourt in 1848, Simon succeeded to the Paris workshop and continued to supply Vuillaume and Gand frères.
Simon formed a short partnership with Joseph Henry between 1848 and 1851. The relationship ended quickly, and attribution within this collaborative period requires particular care because some bows branded SIMON were substantially made by Henry. Simon’s later bows generally became heavier in conception, especially after 1870, but his best work remained exceptionally fine.
