François-Nicolas Voirin received his early training in Mirecourt and moved to Paris in 1855 to work for his cousin Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume. The workshop placed him in direct contact with the leading traditions of French bow making, while the work of Pierre Simon and Vuillaume himself became especially important influences.

Voirin made many of Vuillaume’s ingenious picture bows, whose frogs contain a minute lens and photographic image. In 1870 he established his own workshop. From that point his style became progressively lighter and more refined: heads grew thinner and more delicate while frogs often retained elements of the Vuillaume model.

Louis Thomassin joined Voirin in 1872, followed by Joseph Alfred Lamy père in 1876. Both remained until Voirin’s death in 1885 and carried aspects of his approach into the next generation. Voirin generally guarded his independent production and supplied few outside firms.
