Claude Joseph Fonclause was born in 1799. On stylistic evidence he is thought to have trained with Étienne Pajeot, although no surviving apprenticeship record proves the connection. His earliest branded bows follow the Pajeot workshop language closely.

Fonclause was established in Paris by the early 1830s and later joined Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume’s workshop, where he worked for approximately a decade. He also maintained an independent business on the rue Pagevin, close to the premises of Joseph Henry.

Independence did not end his commercial relationships. Fonclause continued supplying bows to Vuillaume and may also have worked for Pierre Simon. His later production absorbed the influence of the Peccatte school while retaining the orderly construction and refinement of his earlier work.
