Nicolas Rémy Maire was born in Mirecourt and is generally believed to have trained with Étienne Pajeot. He opened his own establishment in 1826 and built a substantial workshop, producing many high-quality bows for Pajeot, Gand and Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume.

The economic crisis of the 1830s brought bankruptcy despite the scale and quality of his output. Following Pajeot’s death, Maire moved to Paris, where financial difficulties continued. These commercial setbacks did not prevent him from becoming one of the major bow makers of the mid-nineteenth century.

Maire’s work often reflects the elegant vocabulary of Pajeot. During his Paris years, however, he also adopted aspects of Dominique Peccatte’s broader and more forceful style. The variety of models and workshop participation means that careful examination is essential when assessing individual examples.
