Jean Adam, known as Grand Adam, was the son and pupil of Jean Dominique Adam. He worked for Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume in Paris from 1842 to 1853, where he encountered the influence of Claude Joseph Fonclause and the classical Tourte model, before returning to Mirecourt and establishing his own workshop.

Seen within the wider history of french school bow making, the surviving work associated with Jean ‘Grand’ Adam is best understood through materials, construction, stylistic detail and comparison with authenticated examples. A brand alone is never conclusive.
